Starting a new business venture is like stepping into the unknown — it’s exciting, it’s terrifying, and it’s a rollercoaster ride.

But fear not, because I’ve been there and done that.

When I was just 20 years old, I started my own online business that has now transitioned my work life into some pretty intricate software and website development projects at a large company.

So, trust me when I say that these tips are tried and true.

  1. Find your passion and purpose

Starting a business is like taking on a wild ride. It’s a lot of hard work, and there will be ups and downs, twists and turns.

So, to stay in the driver’s seat and not lose your marbles, you need to find a business idea that aligns with your passion and purpose.

Ask yourself, “What gets me fired up? What problems do I want to solve? What motivates me to get out of bed in the morning?”

For me, I’ve always enjoyed solving complex business issues using technology. Heck, even my grandpa knows that when his printer decides to throw in the towel, I’m the first one he calls!

People will inherently trust you based on your outward passions.

When you have a clear purpose, it’s like having a compass that guides you through the rough patches and helps you stay the course.

2. Develop a solid business plan

Before you jump headfirst into the business world, you need a game plan.

A well-written business plan is like a superhero’s shield — it can help you secure funding, attract customers, and provide a roadmap for your business’s growth.

A big mistake I made early on was not having similar long-term goals professionally and personally with my business partner. When the cracks began to form, there was no strategy to fall back on.

So, don’t rush into things.

Take the time to research, strategize, and develop a thorough plan that outlines your short-term and long-term goals.

Trust me; it’s worth the effort. Especially later down the line.

3. Network and build relationships

Networking is like a secret weapon for any business, but it’s especially important for young entrepreneurs who are just starting.

So, get out there and mingle!

Attend industry events, join networking groups, and connect with other entrepreneurs in your community.

I was able to leverage the network I had built up throughout college in order to advance my career towards large web development projects.

Building business relationships is like building a community, and it can help you learn from other entrepreneurs, gain valuable insights, and even find potential customers, partners, and investors.

Who knows, maybe you’ll even make a few friends along the way!

4. Embrace failure and learn from mistakes

Here’s the deal — starting a business is like playing a game of Jenga.

You’re going to make mistakes and, at times, watch your whole tower come crashing down.

Others may even laugh at your fallen tower.

But here’s the secret sauce — embrace those failures and learn from them!

Every mistake is a chance to improve your business and refine your strategies.

Trust me; the most successful entrepreneurs have failed more times than they can count before finally finding success.

5. Stay focused and persistent

Starting a business is a long-haul journey, not a quick sprint to the finish line.

It requires a boatload of hard work, dedication, and persistence.

So, stay focused on your goals and don’t let setbacks and challenges get you down.

Steve Jobs faced criticism for the iPhone’s lack of physical keyboard, but he persisted and pushed for the device’s revolutionary touchscreen interface, ultimately changing the mobile phone industry forever.

His vision of a personal phone became the model for every phone moving forward, even disrupting the larger computer/OS market.

Like Jobs, you need to keep pushing forward, and remember that success often comes to those who are persistent and never give up on their vision.
